Black Butterfly ~ Tio

Ni-Vanuatu multi instrumentalist Tio releases the beautiful video for his new single ‘Black Butterfly.’

This track is the first listen from the debut album Sorousian from this talented singer songwriter, due out in
September through Wantok Musik.
Originally from Ambrym Island in Vanuatu, Tio grew up speaking his language, Daakaka while living
immersed in traditional customs and stories.

Black Butterfly’ was released by Wantok Musik on 5 June digitally and on streaming services.

Tio is equally adept at violin, ukulele, guitar, tam tam, djembe and bush bass, and is driven by his passion to mix traditional music and contemporary styles and share his traditions with other musicians and audiences.
The song is inspired by city life and Tio’s belief that people need to rethink their lifestyle’s relationship with nature.

The video was shot by Sarah Doyle on Ambrym island and offers a glimpse into the breathtaking landscape in which Tio grew up. The video was edited by Miyakas (Bizz) Alemu of Simmer Town Productions, who also created the animation of the black butterfly symbol.

Tio explains that “the black butterfly is fling, much like our dreams.

Many people living in the city dream of a simple life or want to be happy, but the reality is that most are just working to earn money and don’t think about the impact of their work; sometimes we destroy without care for Mother Earth. They’re not actually taking the step to live more in harmony with nature. “We know that nature is the source of life – without it we wouldn’t be alive.”
Tio hopes this track and the video will help people reconsider the way that we educate the next generations to live an urban life, disconnected from nature. With the current situation showing how slowing industry and human movement has positively impacted the environment, there has never been a better time to
think about nature and our way of life.
Tio admits “I don’t have the answer – it’s just an idea for us to discuss together.”

Black Butterfly’ is the first single from Tio’s debut album ‘Sorousian’, due out late 2020.  ‘Black Butterfly’ is inspired by city life and Tio’s belief that people should live and work more truthfully. The song asks the audience to rethink their lifestyle’s relationship with nature. “The black butterfly is flying, much like our dreams. Many people living in the city dream of a simple life or want to be happy, but the reality is that most are just working to earn money and don’t think about the impact of their work; sometimes we destroy without care for Mother Earth. They’re not actually taking the step to live more in harmony with nature. We know that nature is the source of life – without it, we wouldn’t be alive.”
