The Musqueam Welcome…time honoured tradition, marks beginning of the 2019 Vancouver Folk Music Festival.

Considered the “Best Local Music Festival’ by the Georgia Straight and Westender magazines, this year’s highly-anticipated Vancouver Folk Music Festival kicked off the event with the tradition Musqueam Welcome.

The xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) people have been here as long as there has been land to live upon. We have lived in the area of our present location for thousands of years, and our traditional territory occupies what is now Vancouver and surrounding areas. Some of our sχʷəy̓em̓ (ancient histories) describe the landscape as it was over eight thousand years ago. 

 The opening on Friday night, the festival will began with a Musqueam Welcome, as the VFMF acknowledges that the festival’s events are taking place on the territory of the Musqueam Nation.
